What is Sugiyama Acupuncture and Anma Clinic?（杉山鍼按治療所とは）
Our clinic was established as part of the activities of the Waichi Sugiyama Memorial Association to carry on the legacy of Waichi Sugiyama, a blind acupuncturist who was active in the Edo period. Waichi Sugiyama devised the “KANSHIN method”, in which needles are placed in a tube and the head of the needle protruding from the tube is tapped with a finger. He also established the world’s first acupuncture school in 1682 to systematically train blind
acupuncturists. Thereby, accurate needling with thin needles without pain became possible, and acupuncture and moxibustion medicine developed greatly, opening the way for the blind to become independent. Today, the fact that acupuncture and moxibustion treatment has spread throughout Japan and the world, and that the visually impaired have been able to become independent in Japan, is largely due to the achievements of Waichi Sugiyama.
In order to carry on the legacy of Waichi Sugiyama, that is, “to contribute to society through the art of acupuncture, moxibustion, and Anma, to train outstanding human resources in these fields, and to help the visually impaired become independent”, we opened our clinic in the “Sugiyama Waichi Memorial Hall” on the grounds of the current Ejima Sugiyama Shrine, where the Acupuncture Treatment School has been located for about 150 years.
Activities（活動内容）
The clinic provides comprehensive Oriental medicine, including acupuncture, moxibustion, and Anma massage, and trains successors to carry on the techniques that have been cultivated over many years in this field. Although the Acupuncture Treatment School, which had continued for 200 years, was abolished by a proclamation of the Grand Council of State in 1871, it is now possible to obtain qualification of acupuncture, moxibustion, and Anma massage at schools for the visually impaired, vocational schools, and universities. However, there are many practitioners who are not able to sufficiently treat patients even though they have the right to practice after obtaining a license. Therefore, we have reestablished our training program at the former site of the Sugiyama
Acupuncture Treatment School as a place for reeducation and training of qualified practitioners to carry on traditional Japanese therapies. At our clinic, we have practitioners who are active on the front lines of the acupuncture and moxibustion industry, so you will be able to study their practices up close and learn how to manage a clinic in order to start your own practice in the future.
